about

One of my great teachers and mentors while studying at the University of Northern Colorado, guitarist Steve Kovalcheck, once described to me a perspective of records done throughout jazz history. Especially in the earlier decades of jazz music, musicians and bands would set a recording date, and whatever came out in that limited time was a "snapshot" of those players at that exact moment. What they heard, how their day went, how they sounded with this exact bass player... all a reflection of their lives. Thus a capturing of this moment, wrapped neatly into a record, tape, or CD, represented the artists excellence, creativity, and imperfections. Miles Davis and Duke Ellington are among those that believed in putting out the music as it was presented, one take, warts and all. Authenticity... This collection of music is one that I have considered sharing for a while.

The greater part of my second year in grad school was spent online, right during the last year of the COVID19 shut down, and therefore limited when it came to creating music with others. Luckily things started to open up moving into Spring 2021. After completing my degree, school still felt sort of incomplete due to so much of it being on zoom calls. Thankfully I was able to pull together a group of some of my favorite musicians and peers to play with, and finally apply all of that time spent practicing and listening while social distancing. Some of my favorite standards are arranged and covered here. This concert was performed and recorded in my living room in Greeley, CO, with excellent capture and mixing by Tyler Hall.
